Coney Island: The Scent for Summer

 First the Hamptons … then
Fire Island… now
Coney
Island
:

When it Comes to Summer Scents and Explosive Fun,

Bond No. 9 is Covering All the New York Beaches

What is the smell of funand how
do you bottle it?  That was our mission
at Bond No. 9 when we decided to capture the essence of Coney Island
and turn it into an eau de parfum.  Why Coney Island?  We
were intrigued by the vintage allure of this century-old fantasy-land
with its honky-tonk chic, its Mermaid Parade, its incomparable hotdog haven (Nathan’s Famous) fronting the Atlantic Ocean
along Brooklyn’s southernmost edge.  But we wanted to celebrate its future, too,
just as a formidable revival is getting under way.
     Coney Island
isn’t just any amusement park.  In its
early 20th century heyday, New
York
’s premier people’s playground was a rowdy,
mind-numbing pleasure-mecca
that
more than matched the energies of the city that contained it.  Its daredevil rides—the legendary nine-hill Cyclone
roller coaster
the Wonder Wheel  the freefall Parachute Jump—set a fevered,
frantic pace, while its bathing pavilions were more like phantasmagorical gilded palaces
that shimmered in the air.  Not to forget
the raucous
nightspots.

For a city that where glancing at strangers for more than two
seconds has always been an impertinence, here was an escape hatch—a Bacchanalia
where one and all had free rein to scream together in terror and joy.  Sure, in
recent decades Coney Island fell into decline,
but today it is decidedly on the upswing, with
brand new rides, a water park, and a mammoth glass atrium in the works.

            Bond No 9’s Coney
Island
conjures up both the magical history and the reawakening of
this beachfront paradise.  Combined in this contemporary
gourmand delight
are the sugar-cool notes

of
margarita mix, hypnotically seductive chocolate and caramel, plus cedarwood.   The high-voltage blue bottle recalls the Coney Island’s expanse of sea and sky, while the
contrasting gold neck evokes the thousands of electric lights that once lit up
its night sky.

Launch Date:
June  1st 2007

Bryant Park, Bond No.9’s Spring Debut

Bond No. 9’s Bryant Park:

The Scent of New York’s Frenzied Fashionistas Descending on a Lush Oasis of WiFe’ed Greenery Just One Block from Times Square

(Who Would Ever Have Guessed?)

Imagine an oasis of unflappably serene greenery, improbably nestled in a canyon of skyscrapers down the street from Times Square, in the heart of midtown Manhattan.  Now, add chandelier-lit mega-tents, A-list designers, world-class models, press, buyers, and, oh yes, racks and racks of next year’s clothes, and you have the paradox that is today’s Bryant Park—the world’s most frenetic style arena equipped with shrubbery, flower beds, a carousel, and WiFi too.

Bryant Park is the inspiration for and name of Bond No. 9’s 28th and most fashion-oriented eau de parfum:  a rose-patchouli concoction with pink pepper added for dissonance.  This sublime park, a formidable backyard for the Beaux Arts 42nd Street headquarters of the New York Public Library, is itself a living, breathing contradiction.  Once a Native American hunting ground, later a potter’s field, and then the site for a world’s fair, it acquired a disreputable reputation by the 1930s.  In the 1950s, the park was redesigned in the French classical tradition, with a large central lawn, elegant pathways, stone balustrades, an oval plaza, and a fountain.  That didn’t help.  By the ‘70s, it had once again sunk into decline.

But the 1990s brought urban renewalists and fashionistas, and with them summer music, movies, a Christmas market, and the semi-annual New York Fashion Week—which has changed Bryant Park forever—giving it a cachet to match its sublime scenery.  While the fate of Fashion Week in this location hangs in the balance, one thing is sure: it has bestowed on this green-space an aura of style that is part of its contemporary legacy.

The Bryant Park artist-designed bottle, with its swirls of pink, lavender, and black on a white background, recalls the exuberant gossamer silk pre-Mod textiles of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s—just when style was re-defining itself.

Bryant Park is available at all four Bond No. 9 stores in New York, countrywide at selected branches of Saks Fifth Avenue and internationally at Harvey Nichols, UK, Paris Gallery, U.A.E, and in Lane Crawford, Hong Kong.

Launch Date:  March 1st 2007

Besides being sold in its 3.4 oz. artist-designed superstar bottle and box presentation ($185), 1.7oz travel size ($125) and by the ounce ($45), either in a 2-ounce basic spray flacon with gilt honeycomb cap ($40-$150) or in our unique vintage or art bottles, featured in a wide variety of designs ($60 - $200).

Music to Your Nose: You’ve Heard the West Side—Now Smell It.

Draw a dividing line down the length of the island of Manhattan, and you have the West Side and the East Side.  The West Side has an unfair advantage: it’s long had a monopoly on music.  This part of town has been home to Carnegie Hall, Tin Pan Alley, the Cotton Club, the Copacobana, Birdland, Lincoln Center, Studio 54, and S.O.B.’s.  Mozart, Broadway musicals, and rock thrive here.  Bebop and disco just about got their start here.  So did meringue, salsa, and reggaeton.  Arturo Toscanini, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, John Lennon, Sid Vicious, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, and Tupac have all lived or performed on Manhattan’s West Side.

As for the flacon:  richly hued in red and blue, it of course displays the universal symbol of music—the curling treble clef.

We’ve asked ourselves—What’s the sound of Bond No. 9’s West Side?  Are we talking The Platters’ version of Twilight Time, maybe? Lizst’s Piano Concerto No. 2.  Cole Porter’s Begin the Beguine?  Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue?  Philip Glass’s Koyaanisqatsi?  That’s just our nose at work.  Fragrance, like music, is open to interpretation.  Everyone who sniffs it will hear—and smell—a different melody of their own.

Bottling The Scent of Bronzing

FIRE ISLAND

Imagine freshly bathed skin, doused with a coating of premium Euro-sunscreen, then warmed up by a midday siesta on the beach—and the sensual stirrings of a body in heat.  That’s the premise behind Fire Island, the latest eau de parfum by Bond No. 9, purveyor of New York-centric neighborhood scents.

Fire Island is an experiential scent—the beach equivalent of Proust’s madeleine dunked in tea.  In this case, the memories conjured up are the sights, the touch, the smell of soaking up the sun the old-fashioned way—lying naked, or close to it, on the beach.  We know, we know:  Those UV rays aren’t safe.  So we thought, why not approximate the smell of skin in the sun,and recapture the bronzing sensation within the safety of a scent?  To make Fire Island authentic, we took a risk and summoned forth the distinctive spicy-sweet aroma of the most sought-after of vintage Euro-bronzing oils—whose iconic smell has wafted all across the Mediterranean, summer after summer, for decades, defining the body on display, with its daydream hints of sex on the beach.  Even when savored at a respectable distance, Fire Island is a reminder of skin sniffed up close.

This scent’s barrier-island namesake, 90 minutes from Manhattan by train and ferry, is the hideaway where New Yorkers come in droves to let their hair down and uncover their skin.  Fire Island may be made of sand dunes, but it’s got distinctive New York-esque neighborhoods (Kismet … Saltaire … Atlantique), a heavy-duty night-life, shopping (natch), and a history, in the 1920s, as a Bohemian retreat.  In other words, it’s home not too far away from home.  So it’s a legitimate part of our scent repertory.

For its flacon, we colored our superstar bottle a sunburst golden-yellow, adding a contrasting deep ocean-blue at the center of our signature token.  The rest?  Pure sunshine.

                                         Launch Date:  July 1st 2006

 Suggested Retail Prices:

Besides being available in its 3.4 oz. superstar bottle in a box presentation ($178), and 1.7 oz. travel size ($110), Fire Island may be purchased by the ounce ($45), either in a 2-ounce basic spray flacon with gilt honeycomb cap ($25), in an array of fashion colored bottles ($40 - $70) or in our unique vintage or art bottles, featured in a wide variety of designs ($60 - $200).

THE SCENT OF PEACE

It Takes a Neighborhood:

Introducing  The Scent of Peace

Bond No. 9, a specialist in defining the scents of New York’s neighborhoods and bottling them into eaux de parfum, has now taken on the greatest neighborhood of them all. It’s the one that hovers over all of our city, the see-and-be-seen A-list place called peacewhere we all want to thrive.

New York has always defined itself by its derring-do and its clear-cut goals. Yet this hodge-podge multi-ethnic, multi-vision’ed metropolis has also reigned as a place of tolerance and détente. It is a city built on non-aggression pacts that are cobbled together street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. This is the way that New York thrives. Post-9/11 has defined us even more by our mutual conviction that the future of our precious city depends on world peace. Bond No. 9’s latest fragrance, The Scent of Peace, was born out of this consensus that hovers like a balm (like a dove) over our entire city.

Intended for men and women alike, The Scent of Peace (arguably the most beautifully civic-minded fragrance ever devised) starts off with sparkling, energizing grapefruit and black current notes, that soon are balanced by the sheer loveliness of lily of the valley, and by those mellowing base notes, cedarwood and musk. The flacon displays a dove in graceful flight. We see this emissary of peace soaring through our city, across the country, across the seas, bringing its message to the world.

Since Bond No. 9 seeks to assist those neighborhoods of the world that are not at peace, for the coming launch we will donate $2 for every bottle of The Scent of Peace that is purchased to UNICEF. That’s what we call Making Scents of Peace.

The Scent of Peace is available at all four Bond No. 9 stores, and is also sold countrywide at selected branches of Saks Fifth Avenue, in Harvey Nichols, UK, Paris Gallery, U.A.E, and in Lane Crawford, Hong Kong.

Besides being available in its 3.4 oz. artist-designed bottle and box presentation ($195), 1.7oz travel size ($120), and the matching candle ($85). The Scent of Peace may be purchased by the ounce ($45), either in a 2-ounce basic spray flacon with gilt honeycomb cap ($25), in an array of fashion colored bottles ($40) or in our unique vintage or art bottles, featured in a wide variety of designs ($60 - $200).

For 2007, Bond No 9 will donate $2 to SEEDS OF PEACE for every bottle purchased.

We supported UNICEF in 2006. For more on Seeds of Peace: www.seedsofpeace.org
