“She curls up on the couch like a luxuriating cat, lights a cigarette with a vengeance”: this is how I have always envisioned pleasure smoking to be like ~decadent, indulgent, nonchalant. Instead, most people I see smoking do it in a perfunctory way wh…

Good afternoon everyone! Today we continue delving in the wonderful world of Neil Morris perfumes and put the focus on two fragrances that are wondrous journeys in olfactory magic.

As is the case with Parfum d’Ida, Burnt Amber is a scent that Neil Morris has co-created with the lovely Ida Meister. How I wish I could have insight in the creative process of this marvelous

Cuba is the first fragrance of British luxury brand Czech & Speake I’ve had the pleasure of sampling. Smelling the beautiful composition for the first time, I realized that it is not just the company’s fittings that have bespoke appeal: this eau is every bit as artisanal and exclusive in feel. Part of their Aromatics line, Cuba was directly inspired by company owner and designer, Frank Sawkin’s

The aroma of leather in scent is akin to smelling a forest of silver birches in the cold ringing air for the first time, inhaling the insides of a pallisander humidor full of “Cohiba” accompanied with a good malt in a tumbler. It’s the razor strap …

October 27th, 2007 — ashtray, cigarette, earth, musings, oakmoss, poems, tobacco, vetiver, woods from Heather @ memory & desire
As it turns out, the previous post on ashtray-smelling fragrances (that weren’t ashtray-like to me after all) wasn’t enough. I’ve been mucking about in the raw materials recently and I have discovered some real, for true, three day-old wet heaping ashtray elements among them: oakmoss, vetiver, guaiac wood, and tobacco absolute.

Smoking - by Elton Glaser - I like the cool and heft of it, dull metal on the palm, And the click, the hiss, the spark fuming into flame, Boldface of fire, the rage and sway of it, raw blue at the base And a slope of gold, a touch to the packed tobacco…

October 21st, 2007 — Leather, ashtray, cigarette, musings, poems, tobacco from Heather @ memory & desire
I do occasionally crave a cigarette, and in those moments, Billy Collins “The Best Cigarette” rolls through my mind as though it were written for me. But the feeling passes. Then I read Edwin Morgan’s “One Cigarette” and it switched on a light for me: the craving of a smell that under any other circumstances would be horrible. The cigarette breath of a longed-for lover, the smoke in the clothes of a family member who has recently passed away. These are aromas that have power over us in ways we cannot control.

The Best Cigarette - by Billy Collins - There are many that I miss having sent my last one out a car window sparking along the road one night, years ago. The heralded one, of course: after sex, the two glowing tips now the lights of a single ship; at t…
